چکیده

We report a multinuclear solid-state ( (23)Na, (39)K, (87)Rb, (133)Cs) NMR study of tetraphenylborate salts, M[BPh 4] (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs). These compounds are isostructural in the solid state with the alkali metal ion surrounded by four phenyl groups resulting in strong cation-pi interactions. From analyses of solid-state NMR spectra obtained under stationary and magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions at 11.75 and 21.15 T, we have obtained the quadrupole coupling constants, C Q, and the chemical shift tensor parameters for the alkali metal ions in these compounds. We found that the observed quadrupole coupling constant for M (+) in M[BPh 4] is determined by a combination of nuclear quadrupole moment, Sternheimer antishielding factor, and unit cell dimensions. On the basis of a comparison between computed paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions to the total chemical shielding values for commonly found cation-ligand interactions, we conclude that cation-pi interactions give rise to significantly lower paramagnetic shielding contributions than other cation-ligand interactions. As a result, highly negative chemical shifts are expected to be the NMR signature for cations interacting exclusively with pi systems.

Direct NMR detection of alkali metal ions bound to G-quadruplex DNA.

We describe a general multinuclear (1H, 23Na, 87Rb) NMR approach for direct detection of alkali metal ions bound to G-quadruplex DNA. This study is motivated by our recent discovery that alkali metal ions (Na+, K+, Rb+) tightly bound to G-quadruplex DNA are actually "NMR visible" in solution (Wong, A.; Ida, R.; Wu, G. Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 2005, 337, 363). Here solution and solid-state...

Molybdenum magnetic shielding and quadrupolar tensors for a series of molybdate salts: a solid-state 95Mo NMR study.

A series of molybdate, MoO4(2-), salts have been studied using solid-state 95Mo NMR spectroscopy at applied magnetic field strengths of 11.75, 17.63 and 21.14 T. In contrast to previous investigations, the principal components of the Mo shielding and EFG tensors have been obtained, as well as their relative orientations. At the fields employed, the anisotropic Mo shielding and quadrupolar inter...

Isolation and Structural Characterization of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Salts with Synthetic Non Cyclic Ionophores

In the present study, an investigation on the complex formation between mono- and divalent metal ions (Na+, K+, Li+ and Mg2+) in the form of salt with different podands using various solvents has been carried out.  Isolated complexes were characterized by different spectroscopic techniques viz. IR, NMR and elemental analysis. On the basis of ...

A time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) developed in our laboratory at Isfahan University of Technology is described here. The TOF-MS instrument uses laser as the ionization source which provides an opportunity to investigate the ions formed in laser ablation or desorption. The TOF-MS has an ionization chamber containing an accelerator and an ion lens to focus the ions into a one meter line...

A solid-state 23Na NMR study of monovalent cation binding to double-stranded DNA at low relative humidity.

We report a solid-state (23)Na NMR study of monovalent cation (Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Rb(+), Cs(+) and NH(4) (+)) binding to double-stranded calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) at low relative humidity, ca 0-10%. Results from (23)Na--(31)P rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR experiments firmly establish that, at low relative humidity, monovalent cations are directly bound to the phosphate group of C...
